Week 2: The Substitute on the Cross

Have you ever had someone step in and take responsibility for something you did?

Read the following text
Isaiah 53:4–6
John 19:16–30

Questions to Discuss:

1. According to Isaiah 53, whose sins put Jesus on the cross?

2. What does “It is finished” mean for our salvation?

3. Why is it important that salvation cannot be earned?

4. How does understanding substitution change the way we view grace?

Heart Application

Is there any area where you are still trying to “earn” God’s approval? Maybe this is stuff that you don’t intend to do but you find yourself trying to earn Gods favor by doing them.

How does the finished work of Christ free you from guilt and shame?

Let’s Dig deeper
        THE FULFILLMENT OF SCRIPTURE

“…that the scripture might be fulfilled…”

Jesus is still fulfilling prophecy—even in His final breaths.

Here is a Key Prophecy:
Psalm 69:21
“In my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”

Nothing is accidental:
• The thirst
• The timing
• The response of the soldiers

All of it is divinely orchestrated.

Why Does This Matters:
It Proves the Bible is trustworthy
It Shows Jesus is the promised Messiah
It Confirms God’s plan was written long before the    cross

Impactful Truth:
God doesn’t improvise salvation—He planned it from eternity.

Discuss how this makes you feel, that God before the foundation of the world planned every single detail of the work of salvation for us.

Close your time together by praying and giving thanks for Gods Amazing Grace that would save us from our wickedness and destruction.
